OneSixOne Nightclub is referred to as 161 or One Six, and has been around since 1999. It is one of the few venues in Melbourne with pretty much a 24 hour license. OneSixOne is a Chapel St stable and is well-known across Australia as one you have to tick off the list when you come to Melbourne. With three levels and a few nooks, OneSixOne is deceptively large. OneSix has a 70's nightclub and VIP vibe, with lots of open facing, comfy red lounges, gold railing trimmings and a square light, rubix cube-like dancefloor. Ground floor is sometimes closed off depending on the night. Down there is a row of red booths, a bar and a smokers. One of the highlights of Ground level is the random, sunken table under the staircase. The other one being the very narrow, alleyway-like smoker's area. Level One of OneSixOne is the main area. Past the bar is the aforementioned lightup dancefloor. In the back corner of the dance floor are some couches, which takes you several visits to realise they exist. The DJ booth is half on the Dance Floor and half in the general area. The rest of Level One is booths and open space. Then around the corner is a hidden room for VIPs and another small bar. Upstairs is a rooftop. The Rooftop level is one of the great areas of OneSixOne. Famously used for day events as the roof retracts and lets in the sun. This makes the roof feel like a different venue to how it looks at night. At night, the top level sometimes has a DJ but is mostly used as a smoker's area and a social area. It also has a bar up there. Each level of OneSixOne feels like a different venue, so you can have different experiences every time you go. On Friday and Saturdays, almost every week is the same/similar DJs. These Residents have been playing at OneSixOne for a very long time and they have curated a very special experience when you understand what's happening. The Music Director Ray Ramon has orchestrated a 22 and half hour journey. OneSixOne is one of those venues where it doesn't matter how busy it is, though it is best when at 70% capacity. In the sense that the musical experience is what you come for. The way to get the most of OneSixOne is to get there around 11pm-1am and strapped yourself in for 6-8 hours. The Music ebs and flows and is one big build up, each DJ is playing a role in a bigger part of a set. When it gets to 3-4am when Tom Evans (one half of The Journey with Jacob Malmo) comes on, get ready for what you have been building up to. When the journey reaches the climax it is uplifting and emphatic, well worthwhile the wait. This is something most people don't understand about the venue and it takes a couple of long visits to get it. Once you see it all fall into place, it will soon be one of your favourite venues. On a Thursday, Music Curator Yanni Arsenakis, who has been looking after the Thursdays for a long time, selects up and coming and established DJs to do something similar to a Friday and Saturday but more so on the Tech House side then the bright and uplifting side. Sundays on the Rooftop is owned by Kitchen Klub, a members only event. They play feel good house music with a mix of funk and disco. Monday days into Tuesday Mornings is the iconic, Breakfast Club. They start up at the rooftop then move down to the main level when the sound goes down. The music reflects the change in daylight. During the day is similar to Kitchen Klub but maybe more of the techno side. Then at night, on the main dance floor is significantly more of a techno and minimal techno vibe. Thursdays are uni night. OneSixOne picks up significantly around 3-4am when other venues begin to close and aligns with the peak of the nights set. Licensed to 6am, OneSixOne Thursdays is for the uni kids learning how to properly go out and is the great introduction to the Chapel St Scene and Nightlife culture. In addition to uni students, Thursdays you'll likely find backpackers and tourists keen to go out like they do in Europe. Friday and Saturdays are a similar crowd. Predominantly 23-30 year olds sprinkled in with a younger crowd 20-23. Though around 4am onwards you find all different types of people and it's a safe bet they will be there till close. Sundays at Kitchen Klub have been referred to as some of the best crowds DJs have ever played to. As it is members only, the application system isn't that hard but the effort to signing up and go through the vetting system ensures that the people that are there actually want to be there. Most notably, Kitchen Klub at OneSixOne promotes a Sober Friendly environment, offering a free mocktail on arrival and free food through the day. This culture enables a focus on dancing and music rather than drinking and drugs. This cultures breds a tight-knit group of enthusiastic strangers who love electronic music and want to dance. Breakfast Club is the afterparty to Circus Sundays. Circus Sundays would close at 7am will a long line of people keen to get in, so Founder JMCee decided to keep the party going, so he and a group of mates created the afterparty at OneSixOne. The crowd centres around hospo people, DJs and creatives you work or don't go out Friday or Saturday and use Sunday and Monday as their weekend. Akin to Kitchen Klub, Breakfast Club has a group of regulars and the crowd is very sociable.
