Garden State
101 Flinders Ln, Melbourne VIC 3000, AustraliaUpcoming Events
Garden State was of the most popular city pubs for a dance floor and after work drinks. The property was constructed in 1896 as a textile mill with a victorian style exterior. Garden State is deceptively huge, with 2 intermediary beer garden levels and a large underground bottom level, where one of the main dances are. Garden State lives up to the name, in the sense that, the venue is almost completely covered in a series of hanging plants, garden beds and pot plants. The leafy aesthetic is complemented by the polished interior and trimmings. The transparent roof brings substantial natural light into the venue which makes it very popular for midday to early evening lunches, bottomless brunches and knock-off beers. The music at the Garden State Hotel on Flinders Lane in the Eastern end of the Melbourne CBD is predominantly commercial. The DJ and dance floor set up occurs on a Friday and Saturday night around 9/10pm. On a Friday, it's not uncommon to see a high percentage of suits and creatives tucking into post work drinks. These types may stay and join the dance floor later. The younger crowd comes through around 10pm for an early dance floor. On a Saturday, you'll likely find a group of, typically, girls/ladies doing bottom brunches at around 2/3pm and will stay until the early hours and often start the dance floor reasonably early.
